From journalism to research to international cooperation: In May 2019 I joined the German development agency’s (GIZ) Berlin Lab as advisor for technology in international cooperation. Leading to that, I successfully defended my doctoral thesis at the Department for Economics at Freie Universität Berlin. It is titled “Internet connectivity economics. Architecture – Conventions – Community”. The thesis explores the question of how network operators worldwide overcome the tension between cooperation and competition and jointly provide internet connectivity. Previous posts include programme director at Volkswagen Foundation, who is Germany’s largest independent research funder, online journalist at public broadcasting company Norddeutscher Rundfunk and editor at the Internet Policy Review, which is the first open access journal for internet regulation, published by the Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society in Berlin.
